Flexible Mountains
These paintings are seen installed in the Colorado Springs Fine Art Museum exhibition “Small Glimpses, Many Times”. 139 objects were made in the shape of my remembered mountain form. I have stared at this mountain out of my studio window for more than 20 years and decided to carve it from memory. As expected, it didn’t look ANYTHING like Garrett Peak in Old Snowmass, CO! We think we see with our eyes, but really we see with our minds. I spent 3 years developing this idea as a humorous way to investigate why we are so set in our own patterns of thinking, often not aware of who, what or where we are! Through these works, I want to offer an opportunity for collective interrogation into whether our minds are telling us the truth; the truth about ourselves, others and why we’re in this time and place.
Mountain paintings are simply an image, in this case a flexible image - just like our perceptions.
